One of the first steps to regulate our emotion is to understand how our body chooses to respond. There are six ways a body can respond, and for many of us we have a go-to and a backup.
For sure, most of us can recall our body feeling all six of these responding patterns, but we are most interested in the patten that is primary for our body.
Once we do understand our pattern for responding to trauma or stressful situations we can begin to recognize when that pattern of behavior is happening.
We can also start to take action to better connect with our body and move away from automatic responding into more choice based responding.
When we want to heal trauma in our body it can be very helpful to practice boxing or spin cycling or hurdle jumping because these full body motions allow our body to experience the opposite of oppression. Once our bodies trust that we can MOVE FREELY we often believe that we can!
The same is true for experiencing our POWER and connecting to our SOMATIC sensations.
We also gain mastery over our reacting bodies when we get to know our emotional triggers. We can do this alone, using guided activities or we can partner with another person or group of folx that are also interested in growing skill at self regulation.
Most importantly, if we notice that our body is not responding well to our efforts to move through trauma, we must admit that we deserve some help.
